Virtual learning and teaching certainly has been a challenge this school year. We seem to be making it work and will continue to work hard in class. Social Studies students have been using resources like edpuzzle, brainpop, flocabulary and various reading assignments to take notes in a digital notebook. All assignments are listed in google classroom. As a parent you have the opportunity to sign up for reports on your child's progress through Google Classroom. Below is a sample parent Summary. If you would like to see your child's assignments, have them log on and show you their Google Classrooms. They should have one for each of their parents.
Seventh grade students recently finished a unit of study on Ancient Egypt. Students had the opportunity to learn about the geography, religion, achievements, politics, economics and social structure of the Ancient Egyptians. Throughout the unit we completed many exciting learning activities. Seventh graders had the chance to skype with a real Egyptologist, Dr. Bob Brier. We also watched his Mr. Mummy video. Learn more about Dr. Bob Brier here. Seventh graders in 140 also had the opportunity to mummify an orange slice to understand the Ancient Egyptian Art of mummification. This lab was completed over 2 different days separated by 3 weeks. First students were given an orange slice to observe and record data including weight, length and width. They then created a mixture of natron out of salt and baking soda to completely cover the orange slice. The next step was to predict what would happen. After three weeks we finished the task of mummifying the orange slices. Students were asked to once again record their data. They then had to compare the data to their original data and connect what they learned to the mummification process of the Ancient Egyptians. We also had the opportunity to investigate a 5000 year old cold case and sharpened our CSI skills as we learned how King Tut Died. This led to a debate with Ms. Collins helping out and ultimately an argument writing assignment where students supported their claim on how King Tut died with evidence from the texts and videos we investigated. (Was he murdered or did he die from another cause?) Finally, students completed a Hieroglyphic escape room! Needless to say we had a lot of fun learning about Ancient Egypt!
Here is our second attempt at making podcasts. I noticed some improvement from the first! Keep an eye out for our third podcast coming soon! Podcast 2 from the students of homeroom 133Podcast 2 from the students of homeroom 202We are having some technical difficulties editing the podcast from room 202. Hopefully we can post it soon.
Eighth graders recently interviewed their parents or another adult to learn about the tragic events that happened on September 11, 2001. In class, the students created podcasts to share what they learned.
